THEIR last event packed out the Railway, so Podrophenia DJs Mondo and Piley are hoping for a top turnout for their latest venture.
The pair – real names Dave Collins and Ian Pile – are picking up on the trend for proper British punk.
They have persuaded Essex punk TV Smith, voice of the Adverts, to headline the night, which will also see sets from Andy J Gallagher, Dick York and Roman Jugg.
“The last one was an absolute stormer,” says Dave excitedly. “It was crazy. We thought it was all going to be against us. Darren Jones and the Seasiders were playing out of town, Mickey Jupp was at Riga and it was St Patrick’s Day! We thought it would just be us in the bar – but it was one in, one out by 9.30pm.”
The word is already out on their next night, which takes place on Friday. Dave says he’s heard from avid fans who are travelling down from as far away as Yorkshire to catch a glimpse of TV Smith and the rest of the bill.
Dave can’t wait to welcome TV Smith, real name name Tim Smith. He says: “ He’s got platinum plated punk credentials. He was born in Romford and he gigged in Southend a couple of times.”
Dave and Ian have built up something of a cult following with their radio show Podrophenia, on Chance Radio on Tuesdays at 9pm, and the nights are their way of turning the show into a live format.
TV Smith, Andy J Gallagher, Dick York and Roman Jugg, along with DJs Piley and Mondo, will be at the Railway Hotel, Clifftown Road, Southend, on Friday, June 21, from 8pm. Free entry.
