AFTER building a wall to block his brother’s driveway, Steve O’Rourke anticipated some kind of payback.
However, even he could not have expected the level of detail that went into transforming his home into a bright pink palace.
Steve, 32, discovered his new look home in Hamstel Road, Southend, after returning from a two-week honeymoon in Rhodes with wife Hayley, 31.
It was payback by Steve’s brother Russell, 35, who six years ago came back from his own honeymoon to find Steve had bricked up his driveway on Poynings Avenue.
Steve said: “I was expecting something, but this is tenfold worse than the driveway I think!”
Russell spent all of last Thursday and Friday painting his brothers house, which attracted quite a crowd.
He said: “What you reap is what you sow. The neighbours were coming out asking what I was doing painting their house. I reckon there were hundreds of people stopping and taking pictures. Even the police were slowing down to take a look!”
Hayley has got used to the brothers’ sense of humour even though the pink house came as a shock.
The mum to Toby, 4, and Aiden, 3, said: “It’s making a lot of people smile, but it’s also causing a few near pile ups on the road with people stopping and starting!
“It’s very extreme! You forget about it when you’re in the house but then when you step outside you forget how bright a pink it is!”
Steve built a four-foot wall meaning no person or vehicle could access Russell’s drive way or front door while he was in Barbados with his wife Melanie, 36.
Despite receiving retribution, Steve remains proud of the wall he built. He said: “When we built the wall at Russell’s, even the postman couldn’t get in. I rendered the wall and wrote “just married” on it. It was very civilised I thought!
“He had to knock it down because no one could get in or out – his drive was like a compound!”
Russell added: “I couldn’t even get the suitcases into the house. I had to knock it down the next day. You’ve got to have a good sense of humour to let these things happen to your home!”
The brothers are both self employed builders with a busy workload so the house won’t be repainted anytime soon.
Steve added: “The lady across the road had a laugh and said we should keep it because it brightens the road up.”
Steve and Russell are now targetting other brother David who is getting married next year, even though he claims to have nothing to do with the latest prank.
But Russell warned: “David lives on North Road, so people there need to watch this space to see what happens to his house next year.”
