Parents who park inconsiderately may be named and shamed by a headteacher.

Heidi Danniells, headteacher of Abacus Primary School in Tresco Way, Wickford, called on parents dropping off and picking up children at school times to respect local residents.

She said the school may have to name and shame motorists who block residents’ driveways, or park on verges in a bid to stop the practice.

Miss Danniells made the comments in a school newsletter after being contacted by concerned residents about plans for the school to provide an extra 100 places, starting next September.

In the school newsletter, Miss Danniells said: “Following the news of our forthcoming expansion,Ihave been contacted by a couple of local residents who are concerned about parking at the front of the school, predominantly at drop off and picking up times.

“I am in regular communication with the local community police, who will continue to carry out random traffic checks, but please can we all work together and respect local residents when you are parking.

“I really do not want to follow other schools by printing registration numbers or photos on newsletters of cars parked inconsiderately, but this may be a route we will have to explore if things do not improve.”

The school has launched a public consultation exercise over plans to admit an extra 15 pupils each year by building three new classrooms.

The expansion would see 60 pupils, instead of 45, admitted each year from next September, eventually seeing the school roll increased from 315 to 420 children.

It has also applied to build an all-weather sports pitch.

Expansion plans have been lodged in response to an anticipated shortfall of school places in Wickford.

Essex County Council has estimated 449 reception places will be needed in 2017/18, compared to 390 in the current year.
