It is understood the car started smoking and was then engulfed in flames while the owner shoped at the Morrisons Local store, in High Road, South Benfleet.
Fire crews said the vehicle was completely ablaze when they arrived.
Two fire engines from Rayleigh Weir were called, at about 10.47am this morning.
The fire was out just over half an hour later.
