VOLUNTEERS cleared 75kg of rubbish from a Westcliff beach.
As part of the national Autumn Beach Clean event, 40 people including members of the Chalkwell Red Caps open water swimming group and members of the Green Action Group spent an hour and a half bagging up litter.
The clean up was part of the national Surfers Against Sewage Autumn Beach clean.
Lauren Hollas, 33, the local representative for Essex in the event, said it was a huge success.
She said: “It was mainly plastic and broken glass that we collected. Most of it couldn’t be recycled but we had one bag full that could.
“There was a lot of cigarette butts, cotton buds and wet wipes. People flush them down the toilets, block the sewers and cause raw sewage to enter the beaches.”
