A bird lover has been praised after he rushed to the rescue of a helpless owl on a Canvey beach.
Phillip Eckett, 68, a former owl breeder from Westcliff Gardens, was called out to save a barn owl, now named Beachy, who was found shivering and in shock on Concord Beach.
He said: “Someone turned up on my doorstep at around 7am and told me that a bird was injured on the beach. It was in shock I think and very cold. It tried to fly away but it flew into the memorial benches.”
The owl was first spotted on the beach by Anne Walker, 60, who lives in Goirle Avenue, Canvey, who was walking her dog, Chica, along the beach.
The owl was taken to Medivet in Furtherwick Road where it is still being treated.
