Update: 3pm
There are currently 11 fire engines on scene.
The fire appears is in an industrial unit.
Update: 4.30pm
Station Manager Kevin Haywood said: "Initially we were called to reports of an industrial unit fire, which quickly spread through embers to neighbouring fields.
"The industrial unit contains a number of cylinders meaning that cordons were put in place to protect crews as they tackled the fire.
"We have made good progress in the industrial unit, and the fire is almost out.
"Crews are continuing to work hard to bring the field fire under control.
"There is still a large amount of smoke around the local area and we advise all local residents to keep doors and windows closed."
Update 4.55pm
Incident Commander Mark Samuels said: "Had it not been for the quick actions of our crews the fire would have spread more rapidly and affected more of the industrial estate. Our crews are doing a brilliant job of stoping this further spread and we're continuing to work hard to bring the incident under control.
"Reports on social media that this is a diesel factory are not true. We are treating this as an industrial unit fire and a field fire.
"We're also echoing Essex Police's advice for pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes where possible."
