An aircraft has been reportedly destroyed during a large fire near Southend Airport.

The blaze, which took place last night (January 28), is believed to have happened at the back of the airport.

Reports say that a derelict aircraft - believed to be a HS.748 airliner - which was being stored in private grounds in Aviation Way, has been destroyed as a result of the fire.

While the fire was located in close proximity to Southend Airport, it was not on aerodrome land and took place when the airport was closed, therefore resulting in no threat to operations.

The aircraft involved is also not one that belongs to the airport, a spokesperson has confirmed.

Photos show fire crews at the scene tackling the aircraft blaze, at the height of which five fire engines attended.

A Southend Airport spokesperson, said: "A disused aircraft fire was reported at 19:30 yesterday evening, Essex Fire Brigade were in attendance and extinguished the fire, Police are investigating.

"Whilst the fire was located in close proximity to London Southend Airport, it was not on aerodrome land and took place when the airport was closed, therefore resulting in no threat to operations.

"The aircraft in question is privately owned and stored thus unrelated to the airport."
