THE A13 is set for cycling improvements as part of a £3.425 million government funding package – but this will not mean cycle lanes in the road.

Southend is being handed the cash to improve the A13 between Seaview Road, Shoebury, and the western Southend border.

Finer details of the plan have yet to be unveiled, but the Echo can reveal part of the funding, which is largely for reducing the risk of accidents by targeting junctions where drivers and pedestrians are at greater risk of accident, will be used for cycling improvements.

John Burr, executive director for neighbourhoods and environments, said: “The funding will also support the development of the city’s local cycling and walking implementation plan, to create a clear strategy around how we go about creating quieter streets away from the A13, to improve and increase the ability to walk and cycle safely in Southend and in turn, help the climate and improve the air quality with fewer vehicle emissions.

“Further plans and updates will go through the democratic process.”

Councillor Steven Wakefield, responsible highways, says the improvements will not mean part of the road is carved out as a cycle lane.

“There will be cycle improvements along the A13 but there won’t be a cycle lane along the A13,” he said.

“The A13 can be very congested and is not wide enough to support a cycle lane in the road.”

Southend West MP Anna Firth said: “This road desperately needs upgrading – it is currently dangerous and far too congested. The improvements will allow much safer and easier travel across our new city.

“However, the work will need to be undertaken carefully, ensuring the least possible disruption, and I look forward to seeing the plans for carrying out the work as soon as possible.”

Sir James Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend East, said: “Running through the heart of the city, the A13 is dangerously narrow at times and heavily congested, creating a risk to all road users.

“I am pleased that the Department for Transport has granted £3.425 Million to deliver the much-needed upgrades to the A13.”
