A STABBING victim suffered “life-threatening” injuries and spent time in a critical care unit after being attacked, a court has heard.
Paul Butler, 22, is standing trial at Basildon Crown Court charged with intimidating witnesses, alongside his brother Curtis Butler, 23, who is charged with attempted murder and having an article with a blade or point.
The pair are on trial in connection with a man being repeatedly stabbed in Valkyrie Road, Westcliff, in the early hours of Saturday, October 30, 2021.
On Friday, Judge Ian Graham summed up the case for the jury at Basildon Crown Court.
He said: “As the victim got to Valkyrie Road he was attacked by a person wearing a balaclava and a hoodie.
“He was stabbed four times and suffered life-threatening injuries to his body including his heart.
“His lung collapsed and part of his bowel tissue died. He spent time in a critical care unit in hospital.
“He had five blood transfusions and the prosecution say it was Curtis Butler who stabbed the man.
“He said he was walking to the station and his friend started screaming and he turned around and saw the attacker who had a knife.
“He said, his friend was screaming and I went down an alley but he followed me and said he’d seen an article about me in the news.”
Last week, Paul Butler gave evidence and insisted he did not threaten or intimidate anyone witnesses to the alleged stabbing.
The court has previously heard from a witness how the victim was repeatedly stabbed in the street and left covered in blood.
Judge Graham added: “The victim said he remembers the attacker touching him a few times and then it all went hazy.
“He said his friend was shouting about him being stabbed and the man having a knife. He said the attacker wore balaclava and a hoodie, had a skinny frame and was about six foot tall.”
The jury was also previously told how the victim, who is in his late 20s, was attacked by a man wearing a balaclava while walking down the road with a friend.
Both Curtis Butler, of Great Gregorie, Basildon, and Paul Butler, of, Royston Avenue, Southend, deny the charges against them.
