A warning has been issued to residents over scam calls from fraudsters claiming to be from "Basildon Trading Standards".

Essex Trading Standards has warned people to "beware" of the calls after a number of reports from Basildon scam victims who have been contacted by fraudsters attempting to steal further money from them.

A spokesman tweeted: "The caller claims to work for Basildon Trading Standards, which does not exist, and that they can help recover money lost to a previous scam.

"The fraudsters are using fake names for Trading Standards Officers and ask for a payment to help recover the money and assist the investigation."

Victims are told to protect themselves by challenging any calls, letters or emails, from people or companies which they do not know.

The spokesman added: "If you’re asked to pay, or give your bank account details, end all contact.

"Report all scam calls to us via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133."
