A DEALER has been jailed for two years after an investigation was launched into the deaths of a man and woman in Basildon.

Officers were working to dismantle drug lines suspected of supplying contaminated heroin to vulnerable users.

On Tuesday, June 13, initial enquiries found drugs at the scene which contained a synthetic opioid of a similar or higher toxicity to fentanyl.

After examining the woman’s phone, it was found the last number dialled was the number of a drug line linked to 39-year-old Ahmed Khelifi, of Gower Chase, Basildon.

Det Supt Gary Biddle said: “Firstly, our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the two people who have lost their lives in tragic circumstances.

“We worked with diligence and at pace to identify a drug line of interest in this investigation, with officers acting decisively not only to disrupt the illicit operation but to ensure others did not come to further harm.

“Public protection, no matter the circumstances, is at the heart of every investigation we pursue.”

Officers with the Operation Raptor team executed the warrant at Khelifi’s address and found crack cocaine with a street value of £1,100 and heroin valued at £1,000.

The heroin was found to contain the same synthetic substance as was found at the address of the deceased man and woman.

Phones recovered from Khelifi were found to have housed the drug line number.

A search of Khelifi’s address revealed £2,305 in cash hidden in the dining chairs.

Det Supt Biddle added: “We would urge people to avoid taking any illegal substances. You can never be sure what you are taking.

“Drugs are illegal for a very real reason. They are dangerous and cause real harm.

“Support is readily available from local drug services and we would urge any users reading this to reach out to them.”

Khelifi offered no comment in his police interview, but was left with no choice but to later admit charges of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs and two counts of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

Appearing for sentence at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday, July 20, Khelifi was sentenced to two years and four months imprisonment.
