FIREFIGHTERS have used an excavator and bulldozer to tackle a blaze at a south Essex recycling centre.
Essex Fire were called to Brickfields Way at around 9:18pm yesterday, with crews from Leigh, Rayleigh Weir, and Southend.
Waste in a large warehouse at a recycling centre in Rochford was alight, and crews quickly extinguished the fire on the surface.
They then worked with on-site staff, who used an excavator and a bulldozer, to move and turn over the material to make sure it was fully extinguished.
Crews left the scene shortly after midnight.
Station manager Howard Midwood said: “I would like to praise site staff for taking swift action when they noticed the fire and our crews for their response.
“They stopped the fire from spreading to the entire warehouse; in the end only 3 or 4 per cent of the waste was affected.”
The cause has been recorded as accidental.
