GREAT British Bake Off star Dana Conway was on hand to re-open a revamped cafe in Westcliff - treating guests to her home made treats.
Dana, from Southend, starred in this year’s series and was invited by Age Concern Southend to unveil Millie’s Café to the community at 9am yesterday morning.
It comes as the KB Café, in the Haven Community Hub, in Hamlet Court Road, closed on January 4 for a 11-day refurbishment that honours the original Havens family grandmother Millicent, also known as Millie.
Rob Woolley, Age Concern Southend’s chief executive, said: “It was a fantastic morning, and it was a pleasure to have Dana, who is a real gifted and talented human being, to come down and open Millie’s Café.
“We were thinking about doing a refurbishment of the old KB Café for quite some time, and we decided to revamp it to attract new customers, as well as pay homage to the original Havens family and grandmother Millicent, known as Millie.
“Dozens of people came down for the opening, which was just amazing, and the positive reception from the community made me feel delighted.”
Age Concern Southend is a stand-alone charity that provides support, advice, services and friendship for older people in the city.
The Bake Off star also brought along her chocolate brownies, lemon cupcakes and carrot cake for everyone to try, which “went down a hit”.
Dana said: “It was a real honour to have been able to open the new Millie’s Café.
“I always love doing stuff for the community, as well as meeting the people who make up this great city, so when I was asked, it was a no-brainer.
“The morning was absolutely manic because so many people came down to check out the new place.
“I even brought along my chocolate brownies, lemon cupcakes and carrot cake, which went down a hit.
“It was a pleasure to have been asked, and I hope the community enjoys what Millie’s Café has to offer.”
The café, open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, continues to provide lunches for Age Concern’s dementia day centre
