Southend’s outstanding grammar schools are celebrating after “outstanding” pupils received their best-ever A-level results.

Southend High School for Girls, in Southchurch Boulevard, said 40 per cent of all grades were A* or A, and 77 per cent were between A* and B.

This is the school’s best performance ever.

Headteacher Jason Carey said: “We are incredibly proud of our students. They worked so hard for these results and truly deserve such outstanding outcomes.

“Thirty-two students achieved all A* and A grades. There was a wonderful atmosphere in school as students and their families celebrated with staff.

“I want to extend my appreciation to all the teachers and support staff for their superb efforts in helping our students achieve these excellent results.”

Michelle Chen achieved an A* in Art and was one of the top performers nationally. She also earned an A in Product Design and a B in History.

Michelle’s mum said: “Michelle has had a fantastic time in her seven years at Southend High School for Girls and is now going to the prestigious Chelsea College of Arts to study Fine Art.”

Nancy Boom was the highest performer in the A-level Media Studies course nationally. She achieved two A*’s and an A in her A-levels.

It was also a record-breaking year for A-Level results at Westcliff High School for Boys with 21 per cent of entries graded A* and 56 per cent of all entries graded A* or A.

In addition, a remarkable 83 per cent of all entries were graded A*, A or B.

Nine students have obtained Oxbridge places and the overwhelming majority of students will be undertaking courses at prestigious Russell Group Universities.

The students will be taking a variety of courses including Medicine, Economics, Engineering, Computing Science, Music, and Law.

Headmaster Mike Skelly said: “We commend the students on their excellent A-level results, and we are proud of these superb achievements.

“I congratulate the students, and our hard-working staff who have taught and supported them. I wish this year’s leavers every success in the future.”

At Southend High School for Boys it was “another very impressive year” with more than 600 A-levels completed and more than 250 A/A* grades.
