A 37-YEAR-OLD was stopped from buying alcohol – because she looked under age.
Val Martin was turned away when she tried to buy two bottles of wine at Asda.
The married mum was in the store in Trinity Square, South Woodham Ferrers, when checkout staff asked her to prove she was over 18.
Mrs Martin, of Carisbrooke Drive, South Woodham, produced her paper driving licence, but because it didn’t have a photograph, it wasn’t accepted as ID. Eventually she had to leave without the wine.
Mrs Martin, who has been married for 13 years and has two children aged nine and six, said: “I am furious at their attitude and lack of action.
“I complained twice to the store and now four times to the head office, who didn’t even bother to reply the first time.
“I want them to guarantee this won’t happen to me again at their store. I have owned a home since I was 22 and have driven for 18 years. Shouldn’t I be able to buy a bottle of wine with my groceries?
“Just because I look after myself, is it right I’m penalised for looking good for my age?”
An Asda spoeksman said: “We are careful to ensure we are not selling alcohol to anyone under age.
“It is also to ensure our staff are protected against the possibility of selling alcohol to anyone who is under age.”
