A FORMER shoe shop in Leigh is set to become a convenience store and off licence.
An application has been submitted for the former Pellini store in Broadway West which is already causing waves with residents saying there are enough shops selling booze in the area.
One resident of nearby Rectory Grove, who asked not to be named, said: “People aren’t happy about this. We don’t want another shop selling alcohol we want decent clothes shops.”
Town councillor Peter Dolby agreed.
He said: “I would sooner see it retail than food. But it’s a convenience store – convenient for local people, particularly those in St Clement’s Court flats to get a pint of milk.
“I think we have enough alcohol outlets, with two Costcutters, a Co-op and the possibility of a Tesco in the old Woolworth store.”
Geoff Fulford, council town clerk said councillors would decide on the application, submitted on July 11, tomorrow.
He added no complaints had been received in writing.
A final decision on the licence will be made by Southend Council and a hearing will only be held if there are objections from neighbours, or statutory bodies like Essex Police or Leigh Town Council.
