MORE than a dozen off-road vehicles revved up to raise money for charity.

The four-wheel -drives competed with harsh terrain, water and mud in a punch competition at a field in Canewdon.

Engines whined and wheels spun as sixteen vehicles grabbed a slice of the action.

Members of the Essex Rochford and District 4x4 Club powered up to stamp their cards at 40 pin punches dotted around a 14-acre field.

The club estimates it raised at least £2,000 on the day.

Club secretary Nick Mitchell, 32, said: "We were at the field on Saturday setting up and there wasn't a drop of water. But come Sunday it was very wet.

The Land Rover driver said: "At one point I was up to my waist in water.

"The real challenge is getting to the punch as they are in difficult places, sometimes on a tree and sometimes on a stake in the ground. If you can get to them then they are easy. We try and do one competition every year."

The club decided this year to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital because the club chairman's son, Aaron Akers, five, spent Christmas at the hospital after suffering a stroke.

The annual charity competition took place off Creeksea Ferry Road.

Each year members of the club, which has about 90 patrons, raise money for a different charity.
