JASON Demetriou has completed a switch to Southend United subject to a medical, Echosport understands.
The right-back - who made 57 appearances for promotion-chasing Walsall last season - has agreed a two-year deal to sign for the Shrimpers.
And he will become Blues’ first signing of the summer should the medical be successfully completed.
Demetriou will challenge John White and Luke O’Neill for a regular starting slot on the right-hand side of the defence after rejecting the Saddlers’ offer of a new contract, along with a switch to League Two club Portsmouth.
The 28-year-old was keen to remain in League One and should soon be joined by former Gillingham winger Jermaine McGlashan who is also close to joining, subject to a medical.
