SOUTHEND United goalkeeper Ted Smith feels clean sheets are the perfect tonic for his sickness bug.
The 20-year-old shot-stopper secured a second shut-out in three games in yesterday’s 0-0 draw at Swindon Town, despite feeling unwell.
But the youngster believes more solid defensive displays will soon have him back to full health.
“It’s not been ideal having the bug and I was struggling a bit before the Charlton game but getting a clean sheet is the best way to make me feel better,” said Smith.
“After waiting so long for a chance there was no way I wasn’t going to play and I was determined to make sure I got out there.
“It wasn’t the best preparation but it went well against Charlton, even though their late equaliser was frustrating, and it’s good to get a clean sheet here too.
“We had a few chances towards the end and could maybe have won it.
“But coming to Swindon and getting a clean sheet and a point is a good result and, although we would have preferred to win, we’re reasonably happy with a draw.”
The share of the spoils came just two days after Smith produced a man of the match display in a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic.
And Smith admitted it had been tough for his team-mates to play a second game in such quick succession.
“Two games in three days is difficult for the team but everyone dug in and really worked hard,” said Smith.
“There wasn’t much going on in the first half but the second half livened up a little bit and there were a few more chances.
“I had to make a couple of saves but the defence was really good and made a lot of good interceptions and blocks.”
The draw - which extended Blues’ unbeaten run of results to 13 games - also saw them slip down to seventh in the League One table.
And Smith is now keen to bounce back against table-topping Sheffield United at Roots Hall this weekend.
“They’re a massive club with huge heritage and they’re top of the league too but it’s a great game to be involved in,” said Smith.
“It’s a big test but it’s one I’m looking forward to.
“I’m really enjoying being in the team and obviously I’ll be doing all I can to make sure I stay in because I would love to have a real run of games.”
Smith, who came through the youth system at Roots Hall, has started the last three games following an elbow injury to Mark Oxley.
