PHIL Brown felt Southend United produced ‘a massive team performance’ to triumph 4-1 at Peterborough on Tuesday night.
Jason Demetriou, Marc-Antoine Fortune, Anthony Wordsworth and Michael Timin were all on target for Blues at London Road.
And Brown was quick to heap praise on his Shrimpers side who now sit fifth in the League One table.
“The game plan was executed to the nth degree and we had 11 players out there who were committed to the cause,” said the 57-year-old.
“We lost our captain and Ryan Inniss was thrown in at the deep end but he really stood up to it.
“However, it wasn’t just him because it was a massive team performance.”
Blues broke the deadlock just before half-time with Demetriou heading home his first goal for the club from close range.
And Brown felt the right-back’s effort was crucial in the Shrimpers coming out on top.
“The first goal was vital, mainly because of the timing and it was probably the turning point in the game,” said the Southend chief “Peterborough had to commit men forward but when that happened there were lots of gaps and spaces for us to exploit.
“But you need intelligence to exploit that and that’s exactly what our front two had.
“We had 500 fans here and probably 499 of them would have said it was time for Nile Ranger or Theo Robinson but these two we have up top at the moment are playing on the same page.
“They are on the same wavelength and they are causing defenders problems with their movement and intelligent which is expected at this level.”
But it was not just the strikers shining in the final third as Timlin also netted late on, just hours after becoming a father for the first time.
Many people would have chosen not to play but not Michael and we’re all over the moon for him,” said Brown.
“It’s certainly been a memorable few hours for him but this a memorable result for us all.”
And Brown was also keen to praise a late save from goalkeeper Ted Smith.
“The moment of the match for me was the save from Ted towards the end,” said Brown.
“I said in the changing room after the game that it was like Gordon Banks but they haven’t got a clue who I’m talking about!
“If that shot had gone in it would have made it 3-2 and we would’ve needed tin hats to see it out.
“But we played some great football ourselves and could have scored more.”
