SOUTH Woodham Ferrers missed out on promotion to London One North, losing 48-7 to HAC in the play-off final.
Woodham went into the showdown on the back of a brilliant season which had seen them finish second in the London Two North East standings.
But - despite admitting his side had met their match in HAC - Ferrers’ prop forward Neil Gittos remained proud of his side.
“Despite a valiant effort from all involved, we more than met our match in an excellent HAC side who were not to be denied on the day,” said Gittos.
With a strong blend of dynamic attacking rugby and stout defence, HAC dominated the game for long periods and were able to overcome Woodham’s continuing efforts.
“We gave every ounce of energy to the very last whistle but were ultimately beaten by a side with ambitions of rapid progression up the leagues,” said Gittos.
“Woodham’s young squad will no doubt have learnt a lot from the disappointment of defeat as well as the standard of rugby to be expected from the level above.
“That being said, it was a fantastic day for the club who, supported by many loyal fans, were able to celebrate an excellent season and a very bright future ahead.”
Woodham’s fine season came after they finished third from bottom last time around.
