GAVIN Gunning has joined Southend United on trial as he looks to bounce back from the controversial way his Dundee United career came to an end.
The Irish centre-back left the club by mutual consent in April just days after a bizarre incident against Inverness which saw the 25-year-old pick up the ball and walk off the pitch.
But he is now training with Blues and boss Phil Brown expects the defender to figure against Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday.
“I know most people think Gavin is mad after what happened but he’s been different class since he’s been here,” said Brown.
“He told me he picked up the ball because he was injured we’re having a look at him and he should play against Great Wakering on Saturday.”
Gunning started his career at Blackburn Rovers and has also lined up for Tranmere Rovers, Rotherham United, Bury, Birmingham City and Oldham Athletic, as well as Dundee United, making more than 150 career appearances.
