SOUTHEND United boss Steve Tilson is backing winger Damian Scannell to shine next season.
The 23-year-old made nine appearances as a substitute last term following a £5,000 switch from Blue Square South side Eastleigh last January.
But Tilson is expecting him to start showing his full potential soon.
"Damian has a lot of pace and power but it's always been his fitness we needed to work on," said the Seasiders chief.
"It was a big step up for him when he came in last season and he obviously hadn't been used to the intensity of the things we do.
"He wouldn't have been able to start a match in League One because of his fitness but a full pre-season will do him the world of good.
"It's going to be hard work for him but he will get the rewards. We've already seen glimpses of what he can do coming off the bench and in the reserves and I'm sure we will see more of that next year."
Scannell is also more likely to be given an opportunity to impress in the first team following the departure of Tommy Black who has been released from Roots Hall after playing most of last season on the right flank.
Tilson is still tracking players to bolster his squad but is not concerned at the young average age of his squad.
None of the Blues squad contracted for the forthcoming campaign are over 30.
"If the right one comes along who is experienced then I'll go for it, but first and foremost it's about them being good players rather than their age," he said.
His assistant Paul Brush, who confirmed the club are still trying to sign left-back Charlie Mulgrew on a permanent basis from Wolverhampton Wanderers, wants even more of the club's youngsters to emerge.
"We've let a few go but hopefully that means some of the promising youngsters can come in and take their place in the squad," said the former West Ham academy graduate, who made his debut for the Irons at the age of 19.
>Gary Hooper has been transfer listed by Southend United. The striker has been unable to secure a regular starting slot since signing for the Shrimpers two seasons ago and looks set to leave Roots Hall.
Goalkeeper Clarke Masters, midfielder Peggy Lokando and striker Charles Ademeno have all been made available for loan.
