BEFORE she started going to the gym two years ago, Rosemarie Berman could barely make it up the stairs, due to the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

But, since embarking on an exercise regime, she has increased her mobility and eased the symptoms of her condition. Rosemarie, 65, says: “I was advised by doctors that exercise would benefit me and help with my mobility. “Before I started going to the gym, I would struggle with walking and going up stairs, things I find quite easy now.

“I wanted to make a positive change in my overall health and joining the gym seemed like a good way to do that.”

Rosemarie started attending Energie Fitness for Women, in Southend, and soon became hooked on working out.

She says: “I go to the gym three times a week now and it is something I really enjoy as it is such a friendly place and I get a real buzz from exercising. “I use a stick when I am out and about, but often, after I finish a workout, I forget to take it because I feel so good – then I have to go back to get it!”

Rosemarie, who is from Westcliff, is also realistic about her health goals. “The condition is not going to improve, but I can make my mobility as good as it can be through regular exercise,” she says. Rosemarie was diagnosed with MS aged 18.

She says: “Initially the MS affected my eyesight, legs and arms. However, each of these symptoms happened separately so I could deal with them as they occurred. “I have been very lucky because the MS has not progressed quickly. The symptoms laid low for 30 years and I did not experience anything else until I was in my fifties.

“Now I feel I am doing all I can to be as healthy as I can and to keep active for all seven of my grandchildren!”
