THE father of a millionaire Premiership footballer represented himself in court after saying he couldn’t afford a lawyer.

Ted Terry, from Chafford Hundred, Grays, stood before City of London magistrates and said he couldn’t afford the £340 fee for a lawyer, despite his son John Terry, Chelsea FC captain, pocketing £150,000-aweek at the west London club.

It is reported Terry stood in the public gallery and said he could not pay for legal representation after the fee went up from £300 to £340.

Terry is accused of racially aggravated common assault against Amarjit Talafair, near London’s Fenchurch Street station in March.

City of London magistrates have said he will face an Old Bailey trial along with two other men in November. If found guilty, he could spend up to a year behind bars.

The 59-year-old admitted common assault last month, but denies it was racially aggravated.

Chelsea defender John lives in a £10million Surrey mansion and was himself cleared of racially abusing fellow footballer Anton Ferdinand in a match last July
