A SOUTHEND man was given 30 points after being caught speeding ten times in just over a year – but was allowed to keep his licence.
The astonishing details were released in figures from the DVLA which were obtained by the Institute of Advanced Motorists after a Freedom of Information request.
The unnamed man ended up with 30 points after the offences, between March 14, 2011 and August 3, 2012. It is believed a computer glich caused the problem.
A woman from Isleworth, West London, accumulated a whopping 42 penalty points last year for failing to disclose the identity of the Southend driver, between May 26 and December 21 last year.
Simon Best, chief executive of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, which is the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, said: “It’s really disappointing to see this issue has not yet been resolved.
“The Institute of Advanced Motorists has no sympathy for owners who refuse to reveal the identity of the driver, and we would welcome an urgent consultation on new ways to deal with this problem.
“Drivers must expect that 12 points means a ban or the whole system falls into disrepute.”
