THRILL-SEEKING volunteers abseiled down a landmark Southend building helped to raise cash for charity.

Southend Association of Voluntary Services organised the event at the 12-storey Essex House in Southchurch Avenue.

Volunteers, one dressed as Superman, were able to choose their own charities to raise money for.

One participant was Brian Shaw, 44, of Wentworth Road, Southend, who joined two others to raise more than £100 for their chosen charities, Armed Forces Southend and Soldiers of the Street.

Brian, who did the abseil dressed as a Second World War soldier, said: “I was a nervous wreck going up. When you first step over the edge, it’s scary. There was a moment when I wanted to change my mind.

“When you’re up there, everyone seems so small. I’d do it again, but only for charity!”
