A CYCLIST who was injured in a road accident has been transferred to hospital in London, after his condition deteriorated.

The crash took place at about 11.55am on the roundabout junction of Cambridge Road and Scratton Road, Southend, on Monday.

The 20-year-old cyclist was in collision with a white Fiat Doblo van and it was initially thought he wasn’t badly injured.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: “We treated a man and took him to Southend Hospital, but his condition wasn’t serious.”

However, an Essex Police spokeswoman later said: “The cyclist, a 20-year-old man from Shoebury, was injured and was initially taken to Southend Hospital.

“He was later transferred to the Royal London Hospital, where his condition is described as serious, but stable.”

He is suffering from chest and leg injuries.

One motorist who passed the scene on Monday, said: “I sawaguy lying in the middle of the road. He looked like he was bleeding, but I didn’t see too much of what happened.”

Shocked Cambridge Road resident Jules Armour, 40, said: “It’s awful to think that could happen to someone. I’m a cyclist myself.Ihope he’s OK.

“I moved into this road in November and that junction is quite dangerous. People don’t always stop at it.”
