A 94-year-old woman remains in a critical but stable condition after being knocked down by a car in Billericay High Street.

The collision happened on the pedestrian crossing near Iceland at about 12.50pm  yesterday.

A 94-year-old local woman was crossing the road at the traffic lights when she was struck by a car.

The vehicle was a green Toyota Corolla, which was being driven by a 66-year-old man also from the Billericay area.

The woman suffered head and arm injuries and was taken to Basildon Hospital.

She was later transferred to the Royal London Hospital where her condition remains critical but stable.

It was initially believed the woman was in her eighties, but police have today confirmed she was in fact 94.

Police closed the road until about 4pm while initial investigations were carried out.
