Ex-Spurs star Justin Edinburgh was given a clear indication of the size of the task facing him after taking over as boss of Grays.
Appointed on Friday after the shock resignation of Andy King, the former Billericay Town manager saw his troops beaten 3-1 at a Southport side who moved off the bottom of the Conference with only their fifth win in 26 starts.
"We've got to learn not to give away goals at crucial times," Billericay-based Edinburgh said.
"Sometimes it doesn't go for you, but there is a bit of a lack of confidence with this group of players."
Edinburgh, who led Fisher Athletic into the Conference South from the Ryman Premier after his stint at New Lodge, became King's assistant only a month ago.
He added: "We haven't won for a while now, but it's no good looking elsewhere because we're the only ones who can respond.
"I have the confidence that the players will do that."
