In response to my letter about bird-scarers, which appeared on January 2, H Stacey highlighted the problems farmers suffered with Brent geese and pigeons.

I have lived in Rochford for 45 years, in quite close proximity to the local reservoir. I have yet to observe a plethora of Brent geese migrating to this area.

I thought they preferred wetlands, although with the new wetlands created out at Wallasea, they may come here in the future.

I travel around quite a lot. Other farmers with new crops growing do not seem to find the need for scarers. What do they do to minimise the problem, now scarecrows are a thing of the past?

As for fireworks, yes they are a problem, but they are not going off every day, twice an hour.

To be honest, with all the new housing being built in this area, with no regard to the road infrastructure, nothing would surprise me.

Maybe your readers think I am just complaining for the sake of it.

My flat backs straight on to the railway line - incidentally, I knew about that when I bought it - I am used to continuous noise, especially with commuter trains at both ends of the day.

However, this noise is not the same as the bangs emitted by this scarer.
