THE mum of a brave little girl fighting a rare illness is determined to pay a hospital back for the amazing care her daughter has received.
Holly Charles-Pulfer, 11, of Basildon, suffers from the rare chronic intestinal pseudo obstruction condition, which means she has to stay in bed for 18 hours a day hooked up to a specialised feeding machine.
She was diagnosed with the condition by chance, aged just three, and has been in and out of Great Ormond Street ever since.
Mum Allison Charles, 39, has been busy organising various events to raise money for the hospital.
She said: “They have given us so much support and have just been amazing.
“We have seen so many teams since we came here that first time when Holly was three. They’re all brilliant and like a family to us.
“Everyone knows Holly and she feels safe here.
“I want to give back to them and say thank you.”
Holly, who is inGreat Ormond Street at the moment for an operation, was in Basildon Hospital in 2006 when a consultant from the London hospital was giving a lecture and asked to take a look at Holly, who was baffling doctors.
He sent her to Great Ormond Street the following day where consultants finally diagnosed her with the condition.
Since then she has had to undergo 25 operations.
Holly has had to miss school because of her time in hospital, but Allison is hoping come September she will be able to start secondary school without any problems.
Allison said: “Holly really misses her friends and she probably won’t go back to school in this school year.
“It really is one day at a time.
“Holly is an inspiration. She obviously has her days when she’s not very well, but she’s amazing.”
On Sunday a fun day will be held at the Winged Horse Pub, Luncies Road, Pitsea, with a raffle, barbecue, bouncy castle and face painting.
After that, Allison and four friends will be taking part in the London to Brighton Walk, which is also raising money for Cancer Research.
So far the group has raised more than £3,000.
Allison will be joined by Kate Eldridge, Nicky Russell, Shelley McEvoy and Michele Jolley.
