DAVE Kates is attempting to set a world record – for throwing the most punches in an hour.
Mr Kates, of Hill Road, Benfleet, is aiming to create the Guinness World Record – and raise cash for charity – by punching a bag 10,000 times in one hour.
He says he has no interest in boxing, but began throwing punches a decade ago as part of his fitness regime.
What started out as a way to keep fit and improve his upper body strength, has now become a personal challenge for the 58-yearold.
Mr Kates, who is a part-time garden designer and full-time carer for his 89-year-old mum, said: “I am not a boxer and I can’t box, but I have been punching for the past ten years.
“It is a little random, but it just seemed to be the best training protocol for upper body speed.
“But the funny thing is, I’m not actually interested in boxing whatsoever.”
Mr Kates is hoping to raise money for the NSPCC and he has been training by lifting dumbells to improve his strength.
The world record attempt will be taking place on Sunday, April 27, at the Benfleet Conservative Club.
Mr Kates is hoping the event will help raise money for the NSPCC.
He said: “I could not make upmy mind with the charity I wanted to donate to, but the NSPCC is a worthwhile cause.
“For future events, I am hoping to work with a number of different charities.”
