Police have urged schools to secure their overhead projectors after a thief was thwarted during a raid.

A crook broke into Our Lady Of Lourdes Roman Catholic Primary School, in Manchester Drive, Leigh, by forcing open a window.

Once inside, the thief tried to steal overhead projectors, but was spooked when individual alarms on the machines went off.

The thief then stole a Dell flat-screen computer monitor instead and fled the scene.

The Echo has previously reported overhead projectors, which are often worth more than £1,000, are a popular target among thieves because the equipment is often used to project images from computer games.

A Southend police spokesman said: "I would urge schools to take security measures for their overhead projectors because in this situation it seems they have not been stolen because of the alarms."
