I agree with Len Lierens (Jan 15) that money from our water bills are lining the pockets of foreign investors, but he does not take his objections far enough.

Public utilities, water, gas, electricity and rail transport, should have no shareholders to syphon off part of payments made for essential services, but be managed by non profit-making organisations.

However, the managing boards must be men with expert business acumen and ensure that they do not become Eldorados for unqualified managers, sub managers, advisers or consultants, etc, from the jobs for the boys pool.

The usual excuses that the money must come from the private sector is spurious, as they are not philanthropists, but speculators who require their pound of flesh and the poorest of our people will suffer.

A country which can easily find a billions for wars, nuclear missiles and atomic submarines should have no difficulty in finding sufficient funds to provide essential services for its population at an economic price.
