Michael Hill (Jan 3) points out infrastructure in the ever-growing area of Wickford is lacking.

Part of that deficiency is the availability of top-quality sporting facilities, especially for young people.

Contrary to his assertion that there is a "generous supply" of pitches, a report entitled Playing Pitch Strategy commissioned by Basildon Council highlights a need, now and in the future, for an increased provision of such amenities, particularly in Wickford.

Also highlighted is the absence of an all-weather floodlit facility in the town. The proposed sports development would rectify this problem.

Our club has to regularly cancel games due to lack of pitches, so depriving children of important recreation time.

It is evident to all those with knowledge of sport in the Wickford that there is a lack of any facilities, never mind quality ones.

It is simply not the case that a club can apply for funding and it will be forthcoming.

In this case the area in question at Southend Road is not suitable for any sporting development that would attract the large-scale funding that is necessary. The proposed sports facilities will be privately developed and run by our club and as such all development, running, and maintenance costs will be their responsibility, without any recourse to public funds.

The new facilities will incorporate many communities activities, inclu-ding a satellite police office which will serve as an important tool in fighting crime and antisocial behaviour in the Shotgate area. A move that I am sure would have the full support of all local residents.

Sport has been identified by many agencies, including the Govern-ment, as being an essential part of the development and well being of our young people and a cohesive force for communities, but without facilities the opportunities will be severely limited.

Officers of the club would be more than happy to discuss the details of the sports facilities, one-to-one, with Mr Hill or any other concerned residents should they wish too.
