Wickford Town Youth FC chairman Mr Silk says in his response to me that part of the deficiency in infrastructure in Wickford is the lack of top quality sporting facilities (Letters, January 19).

Maybe so, but his additional sporting facilities are not fundamentally crucial to our town's quality of life. What's crucial to a town is the availability of doctors, dentists, police, school places, roads, trains and buses that aren't overcrowded, sewage works that can cope and all the other things that are really essential to our lives.

Too much housing development is putting these crucial amenities under intolerable strain and it's housing development that he is relying on to fund his sports facilities. For the majority of Wickford people, this just doesn't add up.
