In 1948 England hosted the Olympic Games. In Wembley we had the stadium and the Empire Pool.

After the games were over they converted the pool into an ice-rink, and it has lasted all these years.

Why then can't we convert Basildon Swimming Pool into an ice-rink? It would give the young a place to go seven days a week, all year round.

I understand why Susan Randle (Jan 18) would like an art gallery and I am not against it. The only thing I would suggest is to put art in another building and keep the pool for the ice-rink, as with a rink you can't have pillars.

All you need is skate hire, changing rooms and the ice.

Wembley can do it, so why can't we?
