INDEPENDENT candidate Colin Letchford won the Canvey East by-election tonight with 389 votes.
Mr Letchford, well known across the island for his work with Friends of Concord Beach said he was "overwhelmed and delighted" with the win.
With 20.87% turnout, Mr Letchford said he couldn't wait to thank the residents who voted for him to represent Canvey East on Castle Point Council.
997 votes were cast including 393 by postal vote.
John Payne from Canvey Island Independent Party took 323 votes, Chas Mumford representing the Conservatives won 208 votes with Jackie Reilly for Labour receiving 76.
There was one spoilt ballot paper.
