John Gardiner will be flying the flag for Britain when he takes on the Europe's finest next month.
The 18-year-old first dan black belt fighter has been selected for the British team for the 34th European Cadet and Junior Karate Championships in Izmir, Turkey.
And he is determined not to let English Karate's bankruptcy stop him achieving his dream.
The financial woes of the Bisham Abbey-based national body means the teenage Westcliff student will have to cover the whole cost of the trip.
"It will cost around £1,000 all together what with the travelling costs, equipment such as a new gi and accommodation," said Gardiner.
"My dad Brian is coming with me and we are determined that I will compete in Turkey because it was an ambition of mine to represent Britain, although I did not expect it to come so soon.
"We have got a bit of the money needed but it would be nice of a sponsor could help out."
