BLACK smoke has been seen billowing from a top secret MoD site.
A huge plume of smoke was seen coming from the MoD site near East Beach in Shoebury this morning.
QinetiQ, the private defence contractor that runs the site for the MoD, has reassured residents the smoke was part of a planned test.
A QinetiQ spokesperson said: “The smoke at the site is from a planned testing exercise as part of the day-to-day work undertaken at MOD Shoeburyness.”
The fire service has not been called but the MoD has its own emergency services on site.
A firefighter from Southend Fire Station told the Echo: "They do burn things, including low grade explosives, at the far end of Foulness Island, on occasion.
"That creates a lot of smoke, so it may be nothing to worry about."
