GET your funk ‘awn for the Jazz Mix club next Thursday, when the ten-strong band Monsters on a Leash appear with their horn-riffs and big band arrangements.

The funky soulsters, who have performance credits with the likes of the Spice Girls and hit West End shows, are renowned for their hard-hitting rhythm section, powerful horns and energetic vocals, which never cease to fill the dance floor.

They’ll be playing the music of Tower of People, an American-based horn section and band, originating from Oakland, California, that has been performing since 1968.

They are best known for their funky soul sound, highlighted by a powerful horn section and precisely syncopated bass-guitar lines.

The Monsters were born and raised in North America, yet these days you’ll find them playing their Tower of Power and Motown sets in the west end of London.

Mick Crook is the promoter for the Jazz Mix club, which takes the Maritime Room of the Cliffs Pavilion. He said: “It’s great that Monsters on a Leash are coming to play the club.

They are heading east outside London and are thrilled to be asked to play and can’t wait to bring some TOP to Southend.

“The Monsters take their name from the Tower of Power’s 1991 album, and if you have seen Tower of Power play live you know what to expect. If you haven’t then you better prepare yourself for a funky good time.”

The Monsters on a Leash line-up for the evening is made up of Chantal Brown – vocals, Andy Greenwood – trumpet, Kevin Wedrychowski – trumpet, Toby Stewart – tenor sax, Piers Green – tenor sax, Claire Mcinerney – baritone, Laurence Cottle – bass, Mike Bradley – drums, Graeme Taylor – keys, and Damien Cooper – guitar.

Doors open 8pm, with music from 8.30pm to 11pm.

Tickets are available from the Cliffs Pavilion Box Office on 01702 351135, priced £13.
