A PUBLIC footpath regularly used by Canvey commuters to reach a train station has been labelled dangerous and in need of urgent repair.
The path, which runs from Hardys Way, Canvey, to Benfleet railway station, is riddled with broken steps.
Neville Watson, Canvey Independent Party councillor for Winter Gardens, believes the stairs are a risk to the public and has called for action to be taken.
He said: “It’s a big route.
Hundreds of people use that path all the time.
“The steps are badly broken and uneven.
“If somebody was to fall it would be a a long way down.
“It has been like that for around three years. The pathway is in my ward and I amworried for the people who use it.”
In yesterday’s Echo, we reported a cycle path linking Canvey with Benfleet station, along Somnes Avenue, Canvey Road and Ferry Road, would be subject to a major upgrade.
The Essex County Council project will see improved crossing points, lighting, surfacing and signage installed.
But Mr Watson has called for further attention to be paid to the troublesome footpath.
He added: “This is a big issue for residents because it is so dangerous.
“I know itmay cause problems when it is closed off to be fixed, but it needs to be fixed as soon as possible. I have contacted Essex County Council a few times, but nothing has been done.”
An Essex Highways spokesman said: “Footpath 33 on Canvey is due for its regular inspection before the end of this month.
“If the path near Hardys Way requires attention, a repair will be logged and carried out as part of our planned public rights of way maintenance programme.”
