TWO south Essex GP surgeries have been named by patients as among the best in south Essex.

The Island Surgery, Long Road, Canvey, was given a 98 per cent overall satisfaction rate in the latest GP Patient Survey, in which patients rate their surgeries on a number of factors, tying with Knights Surgery in Basildon.

Tina Paxman, practice manager at the Island Surgery, said she and staff at the centre were pleased their patients rated them the best in Castle Point and Rochford.

She said: “We aim to provide high level of care to our patients and we are pleased the hard work of all our staff is appreciated.”

Doctor’s surgeries in England are set the target of achieving 85 per cent patient satisfaction but, in the results of the latest GP Patient Survey, only 16 of Basildon’s 35 surgeries managed to achieve this figure.

The worst scores were Dr Aslam’s Practice in Rectory Road, Basildon, with only 52 per cent overall satisfaction, and Dr Pelta in the Queensway Surgery, Southend, with 57 per cent.

Valerie Beard, practice manager at Queensway, said: “We are considering the results of the survey and reviewing the services we provide at Queensway, including access to these services.”

Another which failed to hit the target was Church ViewSurgery inHigh Street Rayleigh, with 69 per cent satisfaction. Michelle Stainer, 40, of Derwent Road, Rayleigh, said she left Church View Surgery two years ago after her doctor ordered her back to work three weeks after having most of her stomach removed.

She was unsurprised by the surgery’s overall satisfaction rating and felt the 93 per cent rating of her new surgery, Audley Mills in Eastwood Road, Rayleigh, vindicated her decision.

The GP Patient Survey is commissioned by the NHS and undertaken by polling company Ipsos MORI.
