THE family of an 11-week-old baby girl with cystic fibrosis worked out for a great cause at a fitness fundraiser to raise cash for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Jade and Alex Hill were devastated when they got the news that their first child, Daisy, had cystic fibrosis.

The condition is caused by a genetic mutation which causes cells in the body to be unable to move salt and water around the body. It results in a build-up of mucus in the lungs and digestive system.

Daisy, who was born at Basildon Hospital, will now receive specialist care from Great Ormond Street in London, until she’s 18.

This has prompted her family’s mission to raise funds for the hospital’s Cystic Fibrosis Department. Mrs Hill, 27, of Delvins, Pitsea, said: “She was diagnosed at three weeks old after her heel prick test picked something up.

“They did a few tests and confirmed she had cystic fibrosis.

“I’m still trying to come to terms with it really, it’s hard to tell how it will affect her as as it affects each person differently and she’s not showing any signs at the moment.

“But Great Ormond Street have been fantastic. They are seeing her quite regularly and are helping us get our heads round it all.

“They will be there to support and care for her until she’s 18. I know it’s one of the best hospitals in the country, so for us to live nearby is amazing.

“They are constantly improving medication and so hopefully she will be able to have as normal a life as possible. So we want to give something back to the hospital which is there for her.”

Mrs Hill’s sister, Stacey Kendall, 22, decided to hold a fundraising Insanity workout to raise funds for the hospital and to raise awareness of the disease at the Fitness First Gym in the Festival Leisure Park in Basildon, where she is a personal trainer.

Dozens of people joined in the class and more than £700 has been raised already with more money still pouring in.

Miss Kendall, who organised the event with personal trainer Aaron Tyler, said: “Honestly I’m totally overwhelmed by the support of all of my friends, family, gym members and clients.

“I want to say a huge emotional thank you to everyone who donated or took part in the class and everyone who came together for this special day to support a charity close to my heart.

“I’m honestly so so shocked with all the support. It is amazing, Daisy is a very lucky girl.”

Mrs Hill was overwhelmed by the amount of support the event had, particularly as many of those taking part were strangers. She said: “It’s been fantastic, there were so many people who have never met me or Daisy or Alex so we have been really touched. The more money we can raise the better.”
