THE FORCE was strong at the Southend Library as youngsters learnt Jedi mind tricks and how to wield a lightsaber for International Star Wars Day.

The library set up its very own Star Wars-themed Jedi Academy to teach children (and their curious parents!) how to be the best of the best at the art of being a Jedi.

On the day 40 potential Jedi’s took part in the special training.

Many of the trainees donned their best Jedi robes or Star Wars costumes.

But they had to be on guard in case Darth Vader was lurking about.

So, with the help of Master Jedi the trainees grabbed their lightsabers for a crash course in how to defend themselves against the dark forces.

The recruits also had the chance to jump into an X-Wing Fighter and have a go sitting at the controls.

As well as picking up Jedi tricks of the trade the youngsters had the chance to have a go at arts and crafts and give themselves a Yoda makeover by fashioning themselves the ears of the famous character from the films.

Children aged under 14 also had the chance to celebrate everything Stars Wars by taking part in a Star Wars Roll into Reading competition.

They were asked to design a Rebellion Recruitment post and drop it into the Children’s Libary at the Forum in Southend. The winning entry is yet to be announced.
