SUMMER activities have been suspended at Hadleigh Country Park's reservoir after a poisonous form of algae was found in the water.
Blue green algae, which can cause serious harm to humans and kill pets, was discovered at the reservoir on Tuesday.
Prior to finding the algae, the park was being used twice a week for popular open water swimming and kayaking sessions.
A spokesperson from Hadleigh Park said: "Unfortunately due to blue green algae being discovered on our reservoir, in line with our safe operating procedures we have had to cancel all water activities, and are likely to have to for the remainder of the week.
"Once it has been confirmed the algae has gone we will reopen the booking system on the website and continue taking bookings for the summer holidays.
"We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but the safety and wellbeing of our customers is our top priority."
As well as regular access to the water for sporting activities, events such as Southend Raft Race, which had been due to hold a small event for participating teams on the lake after it was cancelled last month due to inclement weather.
Chairman of Thorpe Bay Rotary Club, who organise the raft race, Steve Gale, said: "As a club, we are absolutely devastated to have had to cancel not once, but twice, and in both cases for it to be completely out of our hands.
"Our committee do an incredible job and they are absolutely dedicated to the event, but it is also very sad for all the racers themselves, as well as the traders and supporters who have stuck by us. Sadly, this year it has felt as though all that effort has gone to waste.
"We are concentrating on our other events at the moment, but will be focusing on doing whatever we can to try and avoid a repeat of this year's disappointment."
