DETECTIVES are questioning a woman after a man had his throat slit during a row in the street.

The man, aged in his 60s, was attacked in Prospect Close, Southend.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene before the victim was taken for emergency treatment at Southend Hospital.

A 55-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.

One eyewitness said: “There was lots of blood everywhere.

“It was quite shocking to see so much blood and it looked very serious.

“It is quite frightening to think this is going on where I live.

“There was quite a lot of noise and people were trying to find out what was happening in the street.

“I saw a house was closed off with police officers outside it.”

Forensic teams, a police cordon and scene guard were put in place overnight into yesterday while the investigation continued.

James Courtenay, deputy leader of Southend Council, said: “This is a police matter and of course the council will help the police where possible and necessary.

“It is of course shocking when anyone gets stabbed anywhere but it is more so when it happens in a residential street.

“I think it is disappointing this has happened after all the recent work in Southend by the police to cut violent crimes with Operation Southend.

“It is of course shocking for residents as it happened outside their homes.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “A woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm following an assault in Southend.

“We were called to an address in Prospect Place just after 7.35pm on Sunday, following reports that a man in his 60s had been attacked.

“He was taken to hospital for his injuries.

“A 55-year-old woman from Southend was arrested at the address and currently remains in custody.”

An ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the incident.

Treatment was provided by expert paramedics at the scene. His current condition is not known.
