More than a dozen people have suffered cuts to their feet after walking over what coastguards and medics believe to be broken shells on the beach.

Southend Coastguard has reported a "growing" casualty list as a result.

It is believed most of those injured had been on the beach opposite Crowstone Avenue, in Westcliff, today. 

In a statement, Southend Coastguard said: "HM Coastguard Southend were alerted to reports of large numbers of injured people coming back to the the beach with cuts and abrasions to feet and legs, opposite Crowstone [Avenue], Westcliff.

"It is not clear on the cause but assumed to be broken shells. East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust were also called where both Southend Coastguard and East of England Ambulance service started to treat casualties which were growing.

"In total HM Coastguard and the East of England Ambulance service treated 17 casualties for cuts with one casualty moved to hospital for further treatment."

The post added: "Safety Advice: We would advise the wearing of some form of foot protection when venturing onto the mudflats and/or sea in the area of Crowstone Westcliff at this time.

"Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
